The set is made of high quality Russian china and hand painted in the traditional Tsarist way. It contains 4 cups (9 cm high) and saucers; 2 tea pots (15 cm high each); Sugar Basin; 2 jars (jam/honey each 7 cm high); 2 plates for biscuits (17 cm dia) and 1 big tray (42 cm diameter). Golden Khokhloma"Golden Khokhloma" is unique amongst the Russian folk arts. This craft originated in a tiny village of Khokhloma (Nizhegorodskiy region) about 1659 and was mainly used in Russian monasteries. The monks favoured these beautifully gold-painted items, giving them as gifts or using them when feeding pilgrims. Later on, "Golden Khokhloma" items were ordered for the Tsar’s court. The Making of "Golden Khokhloma"The production process of Khokhloma is a very time-consuming and intricate process. It can take up to one year for a piece of wood to become a finished Khokhloma bowl or vase. Firstly, the wood is seasoned in the open air, after which, it is turned into bowls, vases, mugs and pots. The wooden items are then treated with linseed oil and aluminium powder. Finally, they are painted and lacquered. “Khokhloma” ware is not just decorative. All its items can be used as kitchen utensils due to the resistant, food-safe lacquer which carries a manufacturer’s Guarantee. Up to the present day “Khokhloma” items are widely used in Russia, and are very popular worldwide for its bright and distinctive style. Wash your items prior to first use.
